(Nakagami-gun, Katsuren Village), Designated Historical Site

During the process of stabilizing the sovereignty of the Ryukyu Kingdom, this was the residence of an influential Aji (regional chieftain) named Amawari, who resisted centralization of power to the end. In 1458 Amawari defeated the Ryukyuan King's loyal vassal Gosamaru, who was residing nearby in Nakagusuku, after which Amawari attempted to capture the title of king for himself. He attacked Shuri Castle, suffered a major defeat and was destroyed. This process secured the power of the king from his base in Shuri Castle. It is a designated historic sight.
