Atoku Island

Atoku Island is an uninhabited island which consists of a big island and a small island which are located at the estuary of the Urauchi River on Iriomote Island, and its altitude is 42m. Local people call the large island “Ubu-Atoku” and call the small island “Guma-Atoku”. The tradition says that a long time ago there was a flood in the estuary of Urauchi River, and the geographical features were changed after that, and the island was made. There was a sanctuary at the summit of the large island. It is said that Captain Kid the famous pirate hid buried treasure here,so the island has also been called “Treasure Island” .
