This island is located at 6km from south-southwest
of the Ishigaki Island, which it arrives in only 10 minutes from the Ishigaki
harbor. Locally, this island is pronounced with Takidun. The
island whole region is specified as Iriomote National Park, and two places
are specified also for the underwater park. Although other island suffered
much damage at the time of Big Tunami (seismic sea wave) of Meiji
in 1771, this island was protected in the coral reef and did not have
damage. A long time ago, the governmental agency, which reigned over Yaeyama
islands was established. The colony of the red-tiled roof and Shiisaa
(The lion image of a talisman) and the stone wall which accumulated the
limestone and the clean path of white sand are symbolized as the most
typical style of Okinawa. The colony is selected as the town preservation
area (Historic Building Preservation District) specified by a country.
