Gohezu Cave Remains, located at the west
of Ie Island airport, is named so because it is a remains in a Ryukyu
limestone cave of Mount Gohezu (approximately 82 meters high). The size
of the cave is 2 meters in diameter. A 19-meter deep upper cave extends
intricately into a lower cave 35 meters in depth. A large quantity of
deer fossils was excavated during a 1975 survey, which revealed that two
types of deer (Ryukyu deer, Ryukyu Mukashikyon) existed. Human bones and
shells were also excavated at the same time. |
