The Gushihara Shell Mound is a shell mound
found at a sand hill facing the Ie Bay the southern shore of the Ie
Island with a vast area of approximately 20,000 square meters. The shell
mound is also known as the first place in Okinawa where the Yayoi style
earthenware of Kyushu was discovered. Since this area had been prosperous
with shell trade, there are many remains that reveal a shell tool culture.
This shell mound is valued for the remains found gave proof that even
the oldest remains of the New Stone Age in Ie Island dated back to 5,000
years ago, and since burials with human bones were also excavated.
