The Hamasaki Shell Mounds, located at the
southeast end of a sand hill in Ie Island, is a group of shell mounds
dated between the early Okinawa shell mound period (approximately 3,500
years to 2,500 years ago) and the late shell mound period (approximately
2,000 years ago to the 12th century). The Ie Village Board of Education
conducted the excavation survey in 1975 and 1979. As a result of the survey,
Omonawa Zentei type earthenware, Kinen type earthenware, and stoneware
of the early shell mound period were excavated at the northern side, while
these wares made during the late shell mound period were excavated at
the southern side. Although the artifacts range widely from the early
period to the late period, the only ones designated are from the early
period. |
