Ie Island (iejima) Ie Island is an upheaved coral reef
island which located about 9km north-west of the Motobu peninsula in the
north part of the main island. The island's shape is ellipe, 8.4km from
east to west, and 3km from north to south, and its middle part is narrow.
The Ie island has just one village. It is surrounded by precipice of it's
north but the south is mostly sandy beach. Gushibaru shell hill is chosen
for one of the national historic site of it's precious ruin. A the little
east of the center of the island, there rises a island's symbolical Shiroyama
which is called “Iejima Tacchu”
by local people. The island was used to be a fierce battle field during
the World war 2.After the war, about 64% of the island was occupied by
the U.S.military force as their park. Even now, the west part of the island
is kept out, because it is still occupied as for their exercise place.
Main industry of Ie island is farming. Especially growing chrysanthemum
for the cut flower and tobacco are famous leading in Okinawa. Ie island
is surrounded by the beautiful coral reef that is known to many divers.
