Basho-fu, one of the specialty products of Okinawa
seems to have been woven from the old days, and
the islanders already had advanced techniques by
the middle of 16th century. There are also many
Ryuka verses written that are related to the fabric.
“Wakanatui ga nareba kukuru ukasaritei, dikayomahadaouyu
fichaiasuiba” (When the early summer comes we become
light-hearted and restless. Let us go out and play,
spinning threads from Basho, a plant that is like
a girl’s soft skin.)
The young innocent girls, early summer seasons
and their U-biki scenery were beautifully described.
