1)Peel off Basho skins
2)Boil Basho skins in wood lye
3)Scrub the boiled skins with bamboo scissors to remove
impurities
4)Coil fibers (2 or 3 at a time) around the left thumb
and make a ball
5)Soak the chingu (ball) in the water, squeeze it, tear
off fibers into fine threads and tie them in a weaver’s
knot
6)Twisting makes the threads stronger and prevents them
from napping
7)Refining by boiling in lye makes the threads softer
and easier to dye
8)Basho-fu is mainly dyed with Sharinbai (Tekachi) and
Ryukyu indigo
9)Basho is vulnerable to dryness. Always supply moisture
when weaving.
