Hyoyu Kadena

1913 Born to Hyokan Kadena, Makie craftsman in Wakasa Town, Naha City

1928 Graduated Naha Elementary School and worked at grocery stores

1930 Served at Naha Construction Office, Okinawa Prefectural Offices. Quit after being injured during a shark attack. Started helping with his father's work.

1938 Studied Makie lacquer technique in Kainan, Wakayama.

1939-40 Entered "Bembo," Okinawa Lacquerware Craftsman Cooperative Incapable of continuing lacquerware production due to war situation, quit Bembo and started working at post office

1944 Evacuated to Oita Prefecture

1945-53 After the war, returned to Okinawa and served on the U.S. military base

1953 Re-entered Bembo Co., Ltd., becoming Makie and Hakue artisan

1965 Received OKITEN Encouragement Award at Okinawa Art Exhibit.

1968 Received OKITEN Encouragement Award

1974 Received OKITEN Grand Prize

1976 Received OKITEN Encouragement Award

1980 Received OKITEN Associate Member Award

1981 Received OKITEN Associate Member Award, became a judge and member of OKITEN

1991 Designated a "Bearer of Intangible Cultural Property, Ryukyuan Lacquerware" by Okinawa Prefecture

1994 Retired from Bembo Co., Ltd.

1995 Awarded meritorious prize on traditional culture, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Naha City
