Rokoku Gate

Rokoku Gate

A sundial was placed near the gate. A water clock (Rokoku) was also placed on the gate in case of rain or nighttime. "Rokoku" means "water clock."

The gate was also called "Kagoise Ujo" because senior court officials, authorized to use palanquin (Kago), would alight from their palanquins here out of respect for the king. The plaque exhibit for the Rokoku gate was decorated with a golden sun on the upper portion and a red peony flower carved in the center, surrounded by green vine scrolls. Unlike other plaques, this does not have any dragon decorations.
