 The Tansui Ryu Uekata Monument
|
It is supposed that the basis of classical Ryukyuan Sanshin music was first established by Tansui Uekata Kenchu Kochi in the first half of the 17th century (1632-1683). Following Tansui, it was inherited and developed by Ryotaku Takushi, Choju Shinzato, Mongaku Terukina, Choki Yakabi, Choten Toyohara and Sekko Chinen. After Chinen, the styles of his two apprentices, Seigen Afuso and Ancho Nomura, were standardized by their disciples and turned into the Afuso School and Nomura School, respectively. Songs influenced by Tansui were also conveyed, and that music is called the Tansui School.
Therefore, classical Ryukyuan music today is divided into the Tansui School, the Afuso School and the Nomura School, and these three are separately carrying out their activities.
