| Kumiodori as "Okansen Odori" comes to an end with the enthronement of King Sho Tai in 1866. The Edo Shogunate collapses the following year due to restoration of imperial rule. Japan encounters the age of revolution when the "Meiji Restoration" occurred in 1868, and the Ryukyu Kingdom also ended its 450-year history in 1879.
The bearers of Kumiodori, formerly of samurai status, lost their family records and scattered all over Okinawa to seek food. Some moved to the theater in Naha, some moved to isolated islands far away from Shuri. Traditional performing arts techniques started to take root in various places. |
