modern choreographies

Dances choreographed between the late 1920's and today by stage performers and masters of dance are collectively called the modern choreographies or dances. These are generally composed one of two ways. First, an existing piece of classical music or a folk song is selected, then a new song text is written. Another method is to have a professional songwriter compose a new piece, to which the movements of traditional Ryukyuan dance are set.
Particularly notable examples of the former include the Goshin no Mai, the Kohama Bushi, Itoman Otome, Miyarabi, and Ichi no Hana. The Sudamanu Kidama and the Aichidori are examples of the latter. New movements are incorporated that arrange aspects of the Classical and the Popular Dances to suit modern sensibilities.
