Human stories with themes such as "dutifulness,"
"parting" and "unfortunate," generally called "katei geki" (family
plays), were popular from the end of the Taisho period to the beginning
of the Showa period. Katei geki was influenced by the Osaka plays
and portrayed lives of ordinary Okinawan people. Portraying poor people
suffering from recession, it appealed to social problems, and moved
the audience to tears by reflecting sad realities such as girls sold
by their parents to brothels, hard working at spinning mills, and
emigration overseas.
