In the early 1890's, a short comedy "Choogin",
an Okinawan version of Kyogen (short comedy originally performed as
a part of The Noh program) was produced. As in typical Okinawan comedy,
humorous gestures made by the actors called "sanmai-me" make the audience
laugh more than the speeches. Some of the early Okinawan kigeki were
mere imitations of comedies produced on the mainland of of Japan.
Still, those from the mainland were fresh and exiting for young performers
and audiences in Okinawa. Comedies portraying local cultural climate
and culture were accepted by people. Then many new works with social
satires were produced later.
