In the early years of the Showa period,
Inkichi Iraha, a leader of a theatrical company, asked Eikichi Yamazato;
a prominent author/historian/painter/ to write a script of shigeki
for him. Yamazato created "Ryukyu Shigeki", a series of dynamic shigeki
with detailed historical background of Okinawa. One of his masterpieces;"Shurijo
Akewatashi" (Surrender of Shuri Castle) which portrayed a historical
fact known as "Ryukyu Shobun" was shown for the first time at Taisho
Gekijyo.The theatre was established in Nishi-shincho, Naha, by the
fourth son of the last king of the Ryukyu Dynasty, Baron Hisayoshi.
