Ryukyu Buto was originated as one of
the Ryukyu court performances to entertain messengers from China who
came to be present at an enthronement of a new king of the Ryukyu
Dynasty. It began with Ukansin Udui then was improved and sophisticated.
In the mid 1880's, Okinawa shibai began showing at makeshift playhouses
for commones and became popular for folksy comical zuudui based on
classical Ryukyu dances. Combining demands of audiences and performers'
creative urges, many lively and punched up buto were created.
