Description
As the age of the so-called Court entertainment passed away, the solemn classic dances (uhuodori) were too difficult and elegant for the general public to understand or entertain. In order to meet their demand, new dances(Zoo odori) appeared which were danced to the folk songs with a fast tempo. The Zoo odori was the dance in which the techniques of Noh, Kyogen, and Kabuki were adapted in the manner of Okinawan tradition. They were joined with Okinawan dances, folk songs, Kakeuta(songs sung between a man and a woman), Uchikumiodori(a dance performed in pairs). Next, it went on to the age when the typical Okinawan operas appeared. In 1910, Opera "Tumai Aka", "Yakushidoo" and "Okuyama no Botan" were produced. In Taisho era, a masterpiece "Iejima Handuugwa" was born. In this way, following the age of the "Court entertainment", Okinawa Shibai widely became popular, as a general public entertainment. In the age of peace, from Showa to Heisei, new types of dramas have been performed; for example, Kotaro Ogimi's warm-hearted comedies and Sachiko Nakada's slapsticks.
