Because of the break up of court performances
led by the abolition of clans, Kumiudui (Okinawan traditional verse
drama with music and dance performed as a part of court performances
of the Ryukyu Dynasty to entertain messengers from China called "sappo-shi",
who came to Okinawa (then the Ryukyus) every time soon after the death
of a king of the Ryukyus, to convey condolences from the Chinese emperor
and to designate a new king) had to join public entertainment: kageki
and zuudui(fast-moving popular dance) derived from it. Influenced
by kabuki and foreign plays, performers improved their scripts and
performances through trial and error. As a result of their efforts,
many theatres established various historical plays staged during this
time.
