In 15 year of Meiji era, the decree concerning
public entertainment activities was promulgated. Once licenced as
public theaters, the fabricated play-houses (Bank) in reclaimed land
or vacant ground were consolidated. As a result, both play-houses
of Kamaji and Nakamo were combined into one house. Around the 20th
year of the Miji era downtown Naha had three large-scale theaters
- Kyuyo Theater, Naka Theater and Okinawa Theater - where dramas transformed
skillfully from Kabuki or foreign dramas were performed. About the
40th year of Meiji era the general public were anxious to see the
plays in the Okinawan dialect. The so-called Okinawan operas became
very popular. During Taisho era, the theater companies travelled to
local areas and foreign countries to make performances. In the earlier
period of the Showa era, historical dramas of the history of Okinawa
appeared.
