In about the 14th century, the powerful
Ming Dynasty in China had tading relations with no other countries
but those who made tribute payments - subject countries. Ming sent
missions to the Ryukyus. The missions from China attended the coronation
ceremony of the kings of the Ryukyus and gave a letter of appointment
and the crown to the new king. The missions were called Sappushi and
the boats which carried them were called Ukansen.
