In the first half of the eighteenth
century, in the reign of King Shokei, was the golden age of Okinawan
culture. Not only samurai but some of farmers' daughters composed
poems of the Ryukyus. Now, Matsugane, a son of an Inspection House
officer has the admiration of the girls of the village; including
Nabi. But they cannot do anything because of the difference of the
social postion. All they can do is just look at Matsugane from a
distance. And when King Shokei stops by Manzamo in Unnamajiri on
an inspection tour, he is adored and welcomed with dances. Nabe
composes a poem, "Stop rolling, O waves, stop rolling! / Stop blowing,
O wind, stop howling! / Now we hail with hearty welcome / Our gracious
King from Shuri. (Translated by Buntaro Taira) This is a story of
Unna Nabe who was a representative woman poet with Yushia Chiru
in the age of Ryukyu Kingdom.
