Yushiya Chiru Story

The outline of the story

It is the story of an Okinawan female poet who ranks with Unna Nabii. She lives with her brother who is desperate because of economic distress and her sickly mother. She cannot overlook her family's finacial difficulties, she has decided to be sold to a licensed quarter. The poem she composed on the way to the quarters in Naha is well known. It is as follows: O you hateful bridge of Hija! / Were you built by heartless people / Merely to hurry me across / On to that curst quarter? (Translated by Buntaro Taira) Chiru who is degraded to a prostitute falls in love with Nakazato Wakaaji after they encounter their fate. Though they love each other, she is forced to serve any man she doesn't like. She is very sad over her position in which she does not have any choice. This is a sad story of a woman poet who dies at the age of 19.
