 | | Nunchaku jutsu was originally used as a form of defence against violent thugs or groups of people. It was designed to neutralizing such opponents' attacking power and calm them down. For this reason, its major characteristic is that it starts with uke (blocking). The old Okinawan nunchaku are reported to have been from about 22.5cm to 30cm long. Being compact and easy to carry, the nunchaku was a very effective tool for self-defense against any enemy, so many people carried one around all the time. Kata remaining today include Maesato no nunchaku jutsu, and Toji no nicho nunchaku jutsu. | Akamine no nunchaku

Muge Nunchaku
Muge, that is regarded as very close to the original form of nunchaku, was based on part of a horse's harness used by farmers. It remains almost in its original form today. Each of the two parts is about 30cm long. Two sharpened pieces of wood were arranged in fa triangle to act as the horse's bit. It is a little shorter than the present nunchaku, but it can be used smoothly without any alterations. |
