| Opinion is divided on the origins of the Tonfa, but it
may have originated in a Chinese weapon called the bo which
is a wooden stick with handles that was introduced to Okinawa. It
seems that the Okinawans devised the idea of using grain mill handles
as Tonfa. It is a type of weapon unique to Okinawa and no
Tonfa existed in the traditional martial arts of mainland
Japan. It is very difficult to manipulate the Tonfa as a pair, and
proficiency requires lengthy training. Even today, only those at
Dan level proficiency can receive instruction. Current kata
include Yara gua no Tonfa jutsu and Hamahiga no Tonfa
jutsu. |
