Soukan Noguni - Symbol of Kadena Town
Kadena Town lies in the central region of Okinawa Island, overlooking the East China Sea. Currently, 14,000 people live there. Kadena is the home town of "Soukan Noguni" and the birthplace of sweet potatoes, but this fact is not well known. Soukan Noguni is also known as a benefactor of the industry. In 1605 he brought back sweet potatoes from Fujian in China to save the people from starvation when active trading by the Ryukyu Kingdom was beginning to wane.
