Hiji River in Yanbaru
Kunigami Village is the northernmost village on mainland Okinawa. It is situated between the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and among the numerous mountains here are Yonaha Mountain (489 m) and Ushikubi Mountain (457 m), two of the tallest in Okinawa. A multitude of streams flow from this mountain range, including the Hiji and Yona rivers to the west coast, as well as the Oku and Aha rivers to the east coast. An inclined plain of forest land pushes right up near the coastline, befitting the name "Yanbaru" (mountainous land).
