The Sound of the Loom Echoes in Bashofu Hall
Walk around the settlement of Kijoka and everywhere around the houses there are beautiful Japanese banana fields, and you will also spot people spinning thread. Bashofu fabric, made from fibers extracted from Japanese bananas, is one of Okinawa's major textile styles and is designated an "Important Intangible National Cultural Heritage." Its silky-smooth feel and cool fit make perfect clothing for Okinawa's climate. It used to be available everywhere in Okinawa, but presently is only produced in Ogimi Village.
