Traditional Okinawan Settlement title_tabTraditional Okinawan Settlement Taketomi is a small island located 6 km southwest of Ishigaki Island, a mere ten-minute boat ride from Ishigaki Harbor, with a perimeter of 9 km. The shape of the island is elliptical and flat, just like an overturned tray, and it is entirely covered with subtropical forest. Residential areas are located in the center of the island, with the population totaling almost 260. Taketomi has fantastic cityscape, with white sandy paths and red-tile roofs, and was designated an "Important Traditional Architecture Conservation District" by the Japanese government in 1987.
